Sea Kayaking

Explore the stunning and varied coastline of Anglesey and North Wales by sea kayak. We have sit on tops , general purpose kayaks and sea kayaks that can be used on the coastal venues.

The group had to work together, as they embarked on the journey up the gorge

"I loved playing in the waterfalls and having the freedom to explore with my friends."

Sit on Top Sea Kayaking

Sit on top sea kayaks are great for beginners to jump on and immediately start exploring the coastline. There are many sheltered coastal areas around Anglesey that are accessed from beautiful beaches. The group can enjoy kayaking and learn new skills, within a sepectacular yet controlled environment.

Initially we teach the group new kayaking strokes so that they can easily control and maneuver their boats. This leads to playing games, which could be wet or dry,  and journeying. Along the journeys we can discuss the marine ecology and coastal geology.

Sea Kayaking - Caves, Islands & Tidal Races

If you wish to explore further along the coastline then we have specialist sea kayaks. These are faster boats through the water and also can handle bigger seas.

If you are new to kayaking, we will coach a range of paddling skills first. For the more expereineced we can look at handling the boats in tidal races or bigger seas. It is possible to explore some of the offshore islands around Anglesey, caves and headlands. They are also great for expeditions and often used on DofE.

Canoeing on the Sea

On a calm day canoes can be used to journey along the coast. We have the option of rafting the boats together too, enabling a stable platform. This allows a mixture of ages and abilities to still experience the fascinating sea environment around North Wales and be actively involved.

Launch points are often from one of the beautiful beaches. The journeys can then take the group to explore the sea cliffs and caves, hiden beaches or if you are lucky see the seals.

BEACHES AND SHELTERED BAYS

The sea kayak is ideal to enjoy the beautiful beaches. There are many sheltered coastal areas where the group can enjoy kayaking and learn new skills. Popular areas on Anglesey include Trearddur Bay and Rhoscolyn. These are enclosed areas so beginner groups can play and learn within a safe and controlled environment. There is plenty of interest within these areas with rocks, mini cliffs and new beaches to find. We split the day between teaching the group new kayaking strokes so that they can easily control and manoeuvre the boats and playing games. There are plenty of kayak games that can be played which can either be dry or involve swimming and jumping.

SEA CLIFFS, CAVES AND ISLANDS

For more advanced groups we can move out of the bays to discover the bigger cliffs that are around Anglesey. There are dramatic coastlines that are world renowned and that will make an instant impression. High cliffs and deep caves are always fun to explore as a group. Often there are friendly seals that come and say hello, especially if we kayak over to the islands such as Puffin Island. Sea birds are also abundant with quiet locations available, allowing you to experience them in their natural environment.

SEA KAYAK JOURNEYS

We have specialist kayaks that can be used for longer day or even multi-day journeys. Hatches at the front and back can store plenty of kit, including tents and stoves if you are staying out overnight. Anglesey offers journeying and wild camps around all of its coastline and provides a unique and memorable activity. For those looking for alternative DofE expeditions, sea kayaking gives an exciting alternative. The sea kayaking activity can be a half day activity but works best as a full day, enabling skills to be taught and a journey undertaken.

COURSES

As with our other activities, sea kayaking can be booked by private Adult or Family Groups. Prices start at £195 for two people with each additional person (up to a maximum group size of 10) adding £15 to the cost. Contact us for available dates. Sea Kayaking forms part of many of our Schools and Youth courses at Arete. Example 5 day catered residential from £235 per pupil. Sea Kayaking could well be integrated into the multi-activity or water-based Gold DofE Residentials or young persons’ Summer Camps.
